Did you know that today, September 8th, is International Literacy Day?
This year’s International Literacy Day is celebrated with the theme of “Literacy in a Digital World.” Organized by UNESCO, this event aims to show what literacy skills individuals across the world will need to navigate increasingly digitally-mediated societies and explore effective literacy policies. We’ve noticed how digital technologies are playing an ever-increasing role in our daily lives: the way we live, work, and learn. However, we must also realize that there are challenges in promoting digital literacy throughout the world.
UNESCO estimates there are at least 750 million adults and 264 million out-of-school children who still lack basic literacy skills. Bringing together governments, NGOs, private sectors and communities, International Literacy Day focuses on the remaining challenges to promoting literacy as well as working toward their 2030 Education Agenda. At their International Conference in Paris, participants from all over the world will come together to focus on some key objectives—to deepen understanding of what kind of literacy skills people need to navigate in a digital world, and to analyze policies, programs and financing that advances literacy in a digital world.
